No one ever plans that accident. No one ever thinks they will be diagnosed with a disease or become physically impaired. Yet it happens everyday. Once the reality sets in, you may wonder, “Now what?”
You surround yourself with the best doctors, therapists and other medical professionals that you can find. They treat you, teach you, and get you pointed in the right directions. Then something funny happens…
…life.
Your therapist is most likely your best resource to start finding solutions. But as I mentioned in the last post, you, the patient, plays a vital part when it comes to finding solutions for your mobility challenges. The good news is that you are not alone. There are millions of people all over the world facing these day to day challenges, just like you. After discussing your diagnosis and options with your physician and therapist, take the initiative and do your own research. Contact durable medical equipment (DME) providers and complex rehab equipment providers to see what they have to offer. They are located in every community. Use the internet to become familiar with national organizations and their local chapters that offer support for those with the same diagnosis as yours. And don’t forget about nationwide trade show exhibitions. These expos provide a terrific opportunity for you to go and see the equipment available and put you in touch with organizations that may provide the solution you are looking for.
Here at Ri, LLC, we routinely display our solutions at these expos. We meet with end-users, medical professionals and providers, educating them on technology that can make a difference. The Abilities Expo is one of the largest trade show events that brings together products and services for people with disabilities, their families, caregivers, seniors and healthcare professionals. We will be exhibiting at the New York Metro Abilities Expo this weekend, May 2-4, 2014.
No matter how search for a solution that is right for you, be sure to first write down your challenge(s). Then, in order of priority, write what you would like from a possible solution and then get started on your search. I think it is important to remember that there isn’t a single solution that can meet all of your goals. That is why you must keep in mind what is most important to you. If you do find something or someone that provides you a 100% solution to your mobility goals, your are a very fortunate individual. But please be realistic. I generally tell people that if we helped you reach 80% of your goals, then we did pretty darn good!
I’m confident we can help you in finding a solution so you can reach your mobility goals. Don’t hesitate to contact us. If you are in the New York area this weekend, stop by booths 426 & 428 and say “hello.” We would love to meet you.
